All surgical procedures performed on the ears, nose and throat are encompassed under the umbrella term ENT surgery. It is also known as Otorhinolaryngology. ENT surgeons may treat all ages from newborn babies to the elderly and a large proportion of their time is spent in outpatient’s clinics managing conditions medically without the need for surgery.

Common reasons for surgery include;

Ear

• Tinnitus (ringing in the ear)
• Perforated ear drums
• Otosclerosis (effecting the middle of the ear causing hearing loss)
• Otitis media (also known as glue ear, common in childhood)

Nose

• Removal of nasal obstructions
• Sinus infections/disorders
• Tumours of the nose

Throat

• Sleep apnoea (correcting snoring)
• Cancer of the throat
• Paediatric conditions such as the removal of tonsils and adenoids
• Problems with swallowing

Generally such procedures would be carried out by ENT surgeons however there is some overlap with neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons and maxillofacial (face, neck & jaw) surgery. As with all surgeries things can go wrong, risks of complications that cannot always be blamed on medical practitioners. The vast majority of procedures go well but nevertheless, there are times when errors do occur and therefore give rise to a claim, examples include;

• Negligent treatment of inner ear problems leading to tinnitus and/or balance issues
